Installing a Faucet – How Many Holes in Your Sink?

chrome sinkAt some point, the faucet for the kitchen or bathroom will have to be replaced. Homeowners may also opt to replace the faucet simply for aesthetic purposes. Either way, you need to know how many holes the sink contains. Too many people buy a new faucet at their local Lowe’s or Home Depot but end up having to return it because the one they got doesn’t correspond to the number of holes through their sink fitting. You need to identify the number and placement of the holes before having a faucet installed by a residential plumber.

One Hole Sink

If your sink has a single hole, then you’ll need to opt for a faucet that uses a single stem with the handle fixed directly to the faucet itself.

Two Holes in the Sink

For two-hole sinks, you have two options: a bridge faucet or a two single-hole faucet.

Bridge faucet: The levers and faucet itself are branched from a single part connected through the two holes.

Two single-hole faucet: Each lever comes with its own line, one for the cold, and the other for hot water.

Three Holes in the Sink

Three-hole sinks come in two varieties. You will need to measure the distance from the center of the hole on the left to the center of the hole on the right. If the distance is below 6-inches, then you will need to opt for faucets with any of the three designations: 4-inch spread, mini-spread, or center set. If more than 6-inches, then look for the label “widespread” or “8-inch spread.”

Leave the Installation to a Plumber

Some faucets designed for three holes may also work for one or two-hole sinks. In any case, always look at the packaging to determine the type of sink the faucet is good for. Once you have a faucet, leave the installation to South County Plumbing. Our home and commercial plumbing service regularly installs faucets for residents and businesses.
